CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) DESIGNATION
The CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) certification is a voluntary professional designation awarded by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (the “CFP Board”). Financial professionals who hold this designation have met the CFP Board’s established standards for education, examination, experience, and ethics. No federal or state law requires financial planners to hold the CFP® certification.
Additional information about the CFP® certification is available at www.cfp.net.
Initial Certification Requirements
To earn the CFP® certification, an individual must satisfy the following requirements:
-
Education – Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university and complete CFP Board-approved coursework covering core financial planning subject areas, including a comprehensive financial plan development (capstone) course. Certain professional credentials may satisfy some coursework requirements. Individuals who earned the CFP® certification prior to the implementation of specific education requirements may not have completed all current requirements.
-
Examination – Pass the comprehensive CFP® Certification Examination, which tests the ability to apply financial planning knowledge to real-world situations.
-
Experience – Complete either 6,000 hours of professional experience related to the personal financial planning process or 4,000 hours of qualifying apprenticeship experience.
-
Ethics – Meet the CFP Board’s fitness standards and agree to adhere to the CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct.
Ongoing Requirements:
To maintain the CFP® certification and the right to use the CFP Board’s certification marks, certificants must meet ongoing requirements, including:
-
Ethics and Professional Responsibility – Commit to continued compliance with the CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct, including a fiduciary obligation to act in the best interests of clients when providing financial advice or financial planning. While the CFP Board enforces its standards, it does not guarantee the quality of services provided by any individual professional.
-
Continuing Education – Complete 30 hours of continuing education every two years, including ethics-related coursework, to maintain professional competence and stay current with developments in financial planning.
Enforcement:
CFP® professionals who fail to comply with the CFP Board’s requirements may be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension or permanent revocation of the CFP® certification.
